I just wanted to apologize for my recent inability to write and post new articles to the BurgmanRiders.com site in the past couple of months. I owe you both an explanation and a debt of gratitude for the wonderful submitted articles and photos that fantastic readers have been sending in to make up for my absence.

As you can imagine, this Burgman site is not the only thing that I do. A large part of my energy is dedicated to helping people through GetOutOfDebt.org. I help people that have financial problems, worries or concerns and I offer my help totally free of charge.

As you can imagine with the downturn in the economy, the demand for my free help has been getting overwhelming and consuming not only my time, but my mental energy as well.

My Burgman 650 is my primary source of coping with the strain. When I ride the bike my cares fall away and the sadness of the situations I deal with on a daily basis, melts. My bike, this site and the friendships I’ve made through the site and the scooter are precious to me and I hate to disappoint you at all.

I did get a big smile from watching the video of the Burgman 650 races and bikes in Italy. Pretty cool stuff.

So, in a very roundabout way with an explanation, I’m just asking for your continued support and help, by sending in articles and photos, to make BurgmanRiders.com a place where we can all drop in from time to time to escape and smile.

I’m off for a ride.

Steve

If you have a Burgman photo and story to share, you can contribute it here.

Ted Perlinger sent in the following photo to share with you. I had to chuckle when I saw it since apparently Ted and I share the same mechanical sense. Actually I adopted the same mounting setup since I love things that are both simple and work well. I’ve never lost my mobile phone or GPS using this technique.

Ted Said:

“I am a great believer in the powers of Velcro and use it for many purposes. After studying various options to use my Garmin E-Map, I resorted back to the trusted Velcro solution.

The location on the handle bar cover is obvious and can be seen on the photo. The back of the GPS unit is covered completely with Velcro-Strips, except to leave space to be able to remove the connector, when battery replacement is needed. I simply drilled a 6.0mm hole through the gap of the closed compartment door and voila, instant mount. And to maintain the necessary cable loop for unrestricted handle bar movement? You guessed it – more Velcro!

Neither pothole covered Mexican roads nor any other condition has ever caused the GPS to even move over 4000 miles of travel. All function buttons can be easily accessed and operated with gloves. If you feel safer removing it for your overnight stay in some questionable areas, that’s easily done and then locked away in the glove compartment. I never have, because I cover up the entire scooter and so at least it is out of sight. So far it stayed with the Burgman.”

Mike Huffman sent in the following review and pictures to share with you. Great information Mike. Thanks!

“I just installed the Custom Dynamics High Intensity LED strips to my trike kit. I put 2 red strips on each fender along with 1 yellow strip. The dual function brightness red functions as tail and brake lights, and the yellow function as turn signals. The lights are extremely bright and only draw 1/4 Amp. They are mounted in a metal chrome housing which is attached by two screws. I wired them to the existing lights, and through a connector.

When I need to take the trike kit off for servicing the scooter, I simply unplug the connector. The red strip is part number 02043 and the yellow strip is part number 02041. The price is around $40 for a pair of either. Go to customdynamics.com for more information. The following pictures show the tail lights, brake lights, and flashers (turn signals).

Cleaning the Scooter

“While traveling, I decided to give my Burgman a good and thorough cleaning. Here is a suggestion: Drive into the car wash; put the scoot on its center stand. Start the engine, engage your cruise control and accelerate enough to make the rear wheel turn maybe a 100 rpm or so. Then give it a good dousing with the pressure hose, without aiming at the center of the wheel. That could be bad for the bearing seals. I sprayed only as high as the tunnel front to rear and after drying off the Burgman, used the moist towel to wipe the rest. Fast, easy and with rewarding results.”

If I were to import a Burgman 400 2008 from the USA into Israel where would you recommend that I purchase it from in the US?

Do you know of anyone who caters in exporting bikes there?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Sebastian

Sebastian, I’d certainly be able to assist you if I could in your quest for your Burgman but I’m sure there are others here who may have already had a similar experience. Let’s hope they comment on this article.

I have looked into importing vehicles into the U.S. and sending vehicles to the U.S. from abroad and I learned one valuable thing. It seems that very few, if any, countries have a problem with you sending a scooter, motorcycle or vehicle out of the country but the issue seems to be if the vehicle will meet the import requirements of the country it is going in to.

I would suggest that you first check with the department of transportation or motor vehicle agency to make sure that the year and model Burgman is eligible for import without any modifications. If it is, then making transportation arrangements is a fairly straightforward process.

Maybe one of our readers that lives near a major seaport would also be available to make sure the transaction goes through at a port local dealership and shipping arrangements are made for you.

Here in North Carolina we’ve had quite a few rainy days with storms and all blowing westward from the ocean. I was beginning to get a bit of riding fever when yesterday the clouds opened up to let the sun in.

After finishing what I had to do it took me a few minutes to come up with a suitable excuse to go for a ride. “You know that Twisted Tea we’ve seen advertised on television, I think I need to go get some.” Okay, I admit, not the worlds best excuse but I was out the door.

I found myself slowly putting in the headphones, which I desperately love and slowly putting on the helmet, so I could savor the moment. With the tunes on and ready to go I turned the Burgman on and pushed the ‘come to life’ button. The rumble soothed me.

The temperature was perfect and the sun was beating down and blasting away the previous storm and gloom. I’m hoping you know how I felt at that moment but the joy and exhilaration of being back on the Burgman just made me smile from ear to ear inside my full face helmet.

I couldn’t imagine anywhere I wanted to be at that moment than sitting on Burgman, turning the corner to head to the main road and opening the scooter up a bit.

Let me just tell you right now that it took me an hour and twenty minutes to get back home. The nearest store that I could have gone to was two miles away, I picked the one eleven miles away to go to.

As I turned onto the main road I knew I had to take some pictures to try and capture what I could of that moment for you.

The Utter Joy of Riding Again

It is easier to capture the physical moment with my trusty iPhone camera but it is hard to put into words the joy and peace I felt as the Burgman triggered my body to release scooter juice, that cocktail of endorphins and adrenaline that just make you damn glad you are alive and on the Burgman.

The Storm Clouds Make Way For Riding

I knew it was going to be a great ride down Rt 1 towards the wine and beer warehouse store. I was singing away with the tunes piped in from the earplugs and feeling so good that I didn’t care how off key I was, which was a lot probably. As the shower singing sounds were emanating from my helmet I was doing that little weave thing we do and I can only imagine what people thought of me at that moment, but I didn’t care. I was so incredibly at peace, thankful and grateful for that moment on that motorcycle, my Burgman.

I made it to the beer and wine place and went in happy but left just a bit disappointed that they didn’t sell the Twisted Tea I was looking for. So instead I bought a twelve pack of beer with lime. It wasn’t until I got back to the scooter and opened the seat that I realized I had left my big yellow riding suit under there. No problem, I pulled the space filing suit out, put the twelve pack of beers in the space, that already had a first aid kit, gloves, screwdriver, jacket and gloves. Now that storage space is just so big that I was also able to shove the riding suit back in there and close the seat without a problem.

As I pulled out of the place I was sitting at the light, listening to my tunes again and looked to my left, here is the picture. I could not help but laugh. Sure it was the sign for the car dealership but for me, it was a sign from a higher power that all was good and right and as it should be.
