I actually like the crescent add on mirrors.  There are some stretches of road that cause the vibration complained of, but most of the time they are useable. In mounting them, I did use a rectangle of thin bike inner tube material folded into the install channel on the mirrors. Did that because the new 650 is so pretty I didn't want to risk marring even a little bit of it.  I was concerned the addition of the insulation might increase the vibration issue, but it may well have had a beneficial rt effect instead.

Dave,

That's a great list. I've copied it to a file and merged in the links. I left the top box out because there are so many different ones.

I also left out the Blind Spot Mirrors because while I have a pair after a couple of weeks with them I removed them. The reason was they vibrated so badly at all speeds above a walk that I couldn't see anything in them. I found I was wasting more time trying to see something in them than just doing a shoulder check.

Since we have the same bike, and I bought the mirrors from the same place – also I have never noticed any vibration in my bike – I had to assume I got a poor quality pair. I've watched yours and they don't seem to vibrate at all – go figure.

Dave-

Thanks for taking the time to rate the mods and their level of difficulty on installation. This is great information for me because I've been contemplating a few of these myself.

Happy Riding!

I may have answered this for you thru email but if not, here we go.

1.   Stebel Air Horn

Level of Difficulty  to install  4

Satisfaction 5

Had to make brackets for the cubby on the right side.  Sorry I should have taken pictures but I didn’t.  At least MAYBE they can hear me now.

2. Headlight Modulator

Level of Difficulty  to install   2

( Just plug in when you have the dash off.)

Satisfaction  5

Even with these on, NEVER trust a cager.

There biggest excuse is, “ I didn’t see him”.

3.  Turn Signal Minder

Level if Difficulty 4

Satisfaction 4

I cut a hole in the plastic under the handlebars with a key saw so it would fasten down and out of sight.  Finding the wires wasn’t hard IF you have a schematic.  I put a negative ground rocker switch to turn it off if I’m at a stoplight for a long period of time.

NOTE:  I would suggest if you get these 3 mods, do them at the same time.  You just have to take the dash off once and then you can do them all easier.

4.  Turn signals on mirrors

Level of Difficulty  3

Satisfaction 3

You have to take the blinker bulb assemble out which is not to hard to do.  The only problem is there not very bright in sunlight. They stand out great in low light and at  night.

5. Clearview  XL Windshield with vent

Level of Difficulty  2

Satisfaction 4

I really like the Clearview XL with vent.  I really should have got the XXL but, it does A LOT better than the stock for wind buffering.

6. Butt Stop Mod
Level of Difficulty  2
Satisfaction 4
It’s a lot better than the stock “Butt Stop” but I should have gotten a Jac Vintsion one instead.
7. VIP Top Box
Level of Difficulty  4
Satisfaction 4
On the VIP box, it has a third brake light and blinkers on the Top Box.  Cutting the holes in the plastic and wiring was the hardest part.
 Mostly just time consuming.
I changed it over to a Bestem 2012 because if I’m going on trips.
( Which I plan to do this year)
they are removable.  The VIP is a permanent mount.
8.  Kuryakin Grips.
Level of Difficulty 3
Satisfaction 5
As for me, the stock grips were WAY too small.  These have a bigger diameter so it's a lot easier on your hands from getting numb.
Well, I hope these helped.

Hi Dave,

Your input to this site is great, one of the reasons I keep coming back.  I appreciate the links list. I happen to have a Camping World outlet nearby, so on the way home today I stopped and picked up a pair of the blindspot mirrors.  Haven't yet installed though. The helmet lights are apparently on a super sale at the link you provided and I have a couple on order.

Perhaps you could go a little further and give a rating as to what you  think of the mods you have made.  Something along the line of your favorites, considering your satisfaction and the effort and or costs involved.

The mirror add-ons struck me as simply a no brainer safety supplement.  The helmet light, too cheap to pass up if it adds one iota to safety.  The buttstop mod and the air horn have me wondering, worth it, or not? Since Consumer Reports doesn't cover this          stuff. . . how 'bout it.

Hope the new job is going well

Hey Dave-

Good luck with learning the new job. I'm sure it will all work out just fine…hang in there and remember to breathe. I don't have kids myself but can imagine the mixed emotions of having your daughter move out. Looks like you and your wife raised a responsible kid who's ready to fly on her own now. Good job!

Glad to see you back on the radar! Your fans and friends are wishing you the best!

After some new events that have entered in my life, things have calmed down a bit so I'm back. Wondering what events? Yes, I did make a video.

I've gotten quite a few emails about the mods I have put on the scoot. The # 1 question was about the "Blind Spot Mirrors" I have on ALF. So instead of giving you just ONE link, here is a list of all the URL's for the mods I've done. ( So Far )

I would like to remind all the riders out there, in most of the country spring has spring which means………….. Cutting the yard. ( BOOOO!!!!) Yea, I know. I've had to cut mine last week. What does that mean for us riders? GRASS CLIPPINGS on the road. If someone cuts there grass the day before you go riding and the road is wet with dew, be very CAREFUL! They can become slick as owl poop so be on the lookout for that. Also road lines, crosswalks and man hole covers.

Well that's all I have for now. Keep those cards and letters coming in.

Wait a Minute!

What am I thinking? Flash back to 1979 I think. Keep those questions coming in and I'll do my best to answer them thru email, forum or a video.
