Joan from the Mountains of Virginia
That brought up the wonderful mental picture of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy singing "In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia" and made me grin! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..OXYWEB7LgA )
Welcome to the forum, Joan – you came to the right place for good advice from a broad spectrum of riders, not only of Burgmans (or should that be Burgmen?) but a range of other rides including Burgman trike conversions. Take a wander through the articles and topics plus some of the videos and you will see what I mean? Hope you enjoy your association with us and find the right ride for the future.

I am new to the forum- no Burgman yet but looking!! I ride a GW trike, Honda Shadow aero 08, Piaggio MP3 which is too tall for me so I will be selling it.
Now that I am getting older I am leaning more to scooters and lighter weight 2 wheelsers and trike types including looking at Can-Am Spyders.
I have ridden all over the place including to Wa state and to Novia Scotia and Ontario and Denver( for the 09 WOmen's AMA meeting).
I ride with SOuthern cruisers, Motor Maids, WOW, and several other groups. RIding is a passion along with sports and movies and many other things.
I have recently been widowed after 49 years of marriage – I am eager to get on with riding, hope to find out if I can ride a Burgman or have one lowered or triked. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate all help. I have always liked Burgmans but figured that I couldn;t ride one.

Ah, confusion is a wonderful thing … or is it? I thought he was a Chinese philosopher or something! Or was it an alternative form of nuclear energy? I don't know exactly what confusion is but I've got it in spades. Or was it diamonds? Moving swiftly on …
Isn't it a strange world that we live in where a woman who prefers to dress and act masculine is generally acceptable but a man who prefers to dress and act feminine is usually regarded as a freak or a cabaret act! I suppose it is one of those social stigmas that is yet to be broken.
But if someone with some maintenance knowledge can help me sort my crank-valve doohickey from my flux capacitor I really don't care what they want to wear.
As for me? I'll be the one in the pink tutu and army boots speeding down the outside lane screaming "I am the law!"

Well, I'm glad we sorted that one out – thanks, Z, for your honesty and frankness. An interesting take on life (that is in no way meant to be patronising BTW) and one which has a breath of fresh air to it.

Take your pick??????????? Of what?
I'm so used to being who I am my other non-scooter forums, so this is challenging for me.
For most of the world, I think gender identity is, on it's very basic level, a visual que of the 2 basic genders: male and female. A female who appears masculine may be just that, masculine appearing and everything else about that person is otherwise feminine. Store clerks and service people have addressed me as sir and ma'am at different times depending on how they 'see' me despite my masculine dress. I mostly attribute this to societies genderless appearance over the decades. Even the word 'dude' is now used by and for both females and males. Were we in the 1950's, I probably would be addressed more as sir and have a better commercial selection for my wardrobe. I mean how many golf polos with dockers can one possibly wear? I exist in a fluid area of gender identity. Female body, but male thinking. If we're out bowling and we decide to play ladies against the guys, I'm on the guys team. That's how I see myself.
When someone here referred to me as a guy, I thought, 'cool'; then realized I wasn't in Kansas anymore (not on one of my 'people like me' forums). I felt obliged to try and explain so folks wouldn't be confused 'cause maybe some day I'll meet some of you at a rally or some gathering and wouldn't that have been interesting. So it's not easy to explain in just a sentence or two. We live in a big world and there's all kinds of folks in it and I will spare you any more thoughts on gender identity. I'm sure google can satisfy the curious, .
Henry, thank you for your understanding of what I was trying to say before. I laughed outloud at girlie. Yes, full-on, old school butch. I open doors, pay for dinner (mostly), and give her my sport jacket when she's decided to wear her fashionably strappy dress to the show and now it's a little chilly out!
Hey, I saw a used Burgman for sale on craigslist. Can I put that info in the 'for sale' thread?

You are right Alan and Jan, Z DID say "…my gender is female …" but perhaps we're misinterpreting these latest words? "No hint of girlie" is to say (perhaps) that we are talking with a full-on, old-fashioned "Tom boy"! No frills or flounces, more leather jackets of all designs!? That's my take on things anyway. What do you say, Z? Another case of "two great nations separated by a common language"?

Jan,
You thought Z(ee)Rider was a woman, because SHE SAID, she was a woman. In her second post.
Err……sensible conversation?……with a woman?…..surely, thats a contradiction of terms, isn't it.
Well, I'll be off, now.

Hey everyone,
Nige, I'm surely showing my age with 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' Best investment so far I've made have been the Kuryakin grips. Made a world of difference.
I've read other posts that label you as the mad Limey. Surely there must be others, lol.
Jan, Girlie? Did you just refer to me as a girlie? Another mad limey! Nope, no girlie here. No hint of girlie and I don't even know what it means. *chuckles*
I figured Lola was a nice name for a scoot. Congrats on the latest addition to your family.
Dave, glad to be here. I've always worked on my vehicles. Not so much the 4-legged kind anymore. I've got a good mechanic for that which gives me more time to enjoy Lola. I've seen your videos *thumbs up*. I think I subscribed to them.
My ex wasn't so keen to ride, but my current girl loves it. She's always asking if the weather will be good for riding when she visits.
Thanks for all the kind welcomes. And you can all call be buddy, mate, mac, hey you, just don't call me later for dinner, lol. That never gets old. I crack myself up.

Who could forget "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.? With Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin fighting the evil forces of THRUSH. I think you can now get cream for that at the pharmacy!
MAD!!! Me??? Yeah, alright I'll give you that one!

Hello, ZRider. Welcome to the Burgman forum.
You're not the first female to be called a "Guy/Bloke", a, Jan. ?
And, of course, it does explain all the "Gear"…. .
" Kuryakyn", that takes me back, to a T.V. series.
Illya Kuryakyn, and Mr. Solo. Anybody else, remember that?
Take no notice of Nige, he's the only MAD limely, on here.
There's some stuff on running lights, on here, but you'll have to search through the posts a bit, for them.
As for ABS, save your money. Do the same job that they do, for yourself.
It just means, when you want to stop in a hurry (which should be once in a blue moon), just grab the brakes, and quickly release them.
Do that in quick succession, and ABS will be redundant.
Ride safe.

Also, welcome another girlie – they made me a bloke at first too but they know now!
I have to 'doff my cap' – due respect to the technical know how!
And your bike is Lola – how fabulous, I was blessed with a new great neice called Lola Grace before christmas.
best wishes

Good to hear from you again Dave. You seemed to drop off the radar there for a while. Hope you are recovering well from your surgery and that it wont be too long before you're back on two wheels.
Take care and get back in the saddle soon.

Welcome to the forum. It's great to have another female rider here. Especially one that doesn't mine to get her hands dirty and tackle DIY maintenance and farkles on her bike. I can't even get my wife to sit on mine or even take a ride. I really admire you for that.
We try to be helpful when we can.
Anyway, welcome and ride safe.
Dave

If you would like, you can check out my You Tube videos of me and ALF as we ride the streets of Smyrna and just talk about crap. LOL I'm off the bike right now healing up on my total hip replacement surgery I had done on December 30th. It's about to kill me not riding.

Hey everyone,
First off, thanks for the welcome. Good to be here. Second, I don't want to mislead anyone, but my gender is female. I'm more comfortable talking shop with the guys so I hope you treat me that way. And please, no appologies for calling me a guy. I rather prefer it. Just don't call me an old guy. I'm almost in my mid-50's and I hear enough of that at work, lol.
Ohio is the Buckeye state. So named for the nut of the buckeye tree which was numerous back in the day. The nut closely resembles the eye of the buck. May be other reasons, but I like this one which has a native American origin. Among college sports in Ohio, The Ohio State University sports teams are the Buckeyes. Not as fearsome a name as that of the Michigan Wolverines, but lately we've owned them in football *snickering*.
Gear! There's this huge motorcycle outlet in Columbus that I happen to drive by on occasion when visiting family south of Columbus. It just wouldn't be right to drive on by and not stop!. Gotta check out the deals.
If I do the amount of touring that I would like, then a nice touring jacket will be needed.
Right now, my bike is my hobby. I used to play more golf, but since acquiring Lola and getting back into riding, that's all I want to do. Get my chores done around the house; take my dog for a hike; and off I go. The only hard decision is which direction. I usually opt for the lake road. East or west.
Winter hasn't been so bad around these parts. We've had our normal share of snow and I'm dog tired of shoveling it. Too cheap to buy a snowthrower. Had a small one for years and it just died. Bought it used and didin't want to put any more $$ into it. I figure 4 more weeks and we'll start seeing warmer temps. Sounds like you Brits were getting banged up pretty good this winter?
Our roads look really chewed up. Lots of potholes on the highways and such. They patch, then repatch. I see orange construction barrells in my future come spring, but that's the norm too.
As far as maintenace, yeah I enjoy working on the scoot vs the truck. Much easier *thumbs up* Since having Lola, I've always changed out the fluids, and spark plugs. The only trouble I've ever had was when I first changed out the final gear oil. Stripped one of the plugs. That 8mm internal hex is just too small in my opinion. That or it could use a bit more depth. Anyway, don't forget the anti-seize and a decent torque wrench. We have a place called Harbor Freight and I have gotten a good selection of tools at very reasonable prices like a click stop torque wrench for my on board tool box.
Also had to drain and take the radiator off once for a repair (had a pin hole). A local radiator shop did the repair. Real nice guys. The new tires I got this past summer I had my dealer mount. I'm looking to do mods as time permits. I know of a website where this guy has done a whole bunch of stuff with his Burgy, like simple instructions for a front fender mud flap. Did that one too. I'd like to do running lights. Convert the turn signal lights or mount something. Have to research that more.
I mounted the Bestem top box per his instructions. Came out real nice.
I know we don't have as many scoot choices as you all do across the pond. At the motorcycle show last month, I saw the T-Max. My dealer has a Honda DN-01. I think the Kymco Xciting is a good choice as well as others, but I have yet to see a scoot that would change my mind on the Lardy. If anything, I might consider trading her in on an exec model just for the ABS.
Again, real glad to be part of the Burgman family here. Look forward to chewin' the fat, shootin' the breeze and talking everything and anything Burgy.
Z
Nige, we could all use a bit o' mad now and then. I'll fit in just fine, lol.

Hey Z and welcome – I want to see all this gear in a picture gallery! I can't believe one guy can have accumulated so much for his "biking wardrobe". Showtime, buddy!?
One other thing….which one is the Buckeye State and why? (Sorry but I'm a Brit and don't have the inside knowledge).

Good to hear from you Z. In fact it's good to hear from anyone from the US. It seems very quiet on your side of the pond. I was beginning to wonder if you had all hibernated until spring because of the appalling weather! Lol!
I can see your going to be a regular contributor on here and will soon be our resident expert on all maintenance matters as well as riding apparel and scoot fashion!
Feel free to join in the banter with us mad limeys.
Ride safe mate.
