It's easily done Henry! I nearly did exactly the same a bout a week ago while giving Lawmaster a bath. I moved it forward to wash the next arc of the front wheel and inadvertently moved the sidestand back a bit. How it didn't fall over I don't know because the sidestand was well back past the perpendicular!

Luckily I spotted it and disaster was averted. I always check now.

I can't believe I did that!

There I was taking a quick run into town to get a bag to strap on the back for the Wootton Bassett Ride-out and I parked in the usual free space next to the cycle rack. There was a very smart Ninja parked next to me and I noticed that the rider had sensibly chained his front wheel to a steel bar marking the end of the rack. Good idea, thought I, and then realised I had stopped a little too far from the bar for my chain to reach. So I lifted the scoot off the side stand and rolled it a little closer. Then i went round the front and attached my chain and disc lock.

I checked the steering lock was applied and the seat was locked down and ambled off towards the pedestrian precinct about 50 yds away. I was almost there when I heard an unmistakeable crash! I spun round and there was my beloved Burgie lying pitifully on its ear! I can only presume I had inadvertently knocked the side stand back to a central position and it eventually toppled off! Yell

(I was appreciative that a fine young worthy saw this old man's predicament and helped me to lift the bike up again!)

I still can't believe I did that! Surprisingly the damage is limited to scrapes down the edge of the main leg-guard on the lefthand side. The mirror was knocked into the folded position with no damage, and the side panel is unmarked! SO maybe I should think myself lucky – if a little foolish! :(

Isn't it strange.

I've been on this site for months, now, and I've never looked to see if anybody has PM'd me. I just didn't give it a thought. Surprised

Untill today, that is. Laugh

I'll have to keep my eye's open, in future, just in case. Wink

56.6 mile run today, for me. Smile

I'd looked on the DCA web site ( Dinghy Cruising Assn.) earlier, and saw there was a cruise on, in Langston Harbour.

So I kitted up and rode to Bedhampton slip, North East of Portsmouth, where they were to launch from.

But they had all gone out of site, by the time I got there.

So I chased after them, by dropping down onto Hayling Island.

I spotted them, on a beach, having a cup of tea, and had a good old chin wag, with them. As I used to be a member myself, a few years ago.

Oh, and there's a good carvery, on the island, so I popped in for one, and a pint of bitter. Laugh

Cheers.

Had a really good ride out today. I wasn't sure if it would be warm enough but by midday the temp had got up to about 3°C and the sun was shining so I though I would chance it. Togged up warm I set out for the south coast at West Bay via Beaminster and Bridport. The sea was calm and the sun glinted off the surface like a million diamonds. Ooh! So poetic!

After taking in the picture postcard scenery and several deep lungfuls of fresh sea air I headed off on the A35 to Dorchester, skirting the Duchy of Cornwall estate town of Poundbury and then down to Weymouth. A quick text message secures me a coffee at my sister-in-law's house on Portland. The views of Wemouth bay, Chesil Beach and the Jurassic Coast are spectacular from the top of Portland and today the visibility was at least 15 miles.

At about 4pm I headed for home going back via Weymouth and Dorchester then up the A37 through rural Dorset past such wonderful place names as Chantmarle, Ryme Intrinseca, Cerne Abbas and Melbury Bubb. The onlyadverse weather encountered all day was on the way home across the Dorset hills when I ran through a light sleet shower.

All in all a very nice day out in the sunshine. Next time I shall have to take my camera with me.

In actual fact, Peter, I eat at home, all the time. Smile  I don't have a carvery EVERY week, but have been known to have two or three, in a week.

I bought a box of OXO's, yesterday. But only 12, this time. Aren't they dear, now. Wink  Surprised

The use by date is October 2011. Which means they'll be alright, right up to 2028, ish. Laugh

Some of those old oxo's, were still crumbly. Some weren't.

You really DON'T eat at home much do you, Alan?! 16 or 17 year-old Oxo cubes? I should think they would be difficult to use NOW! LOL! And yes you CAN still buy them – in fact since the last time you purchased any they have introduced new flavours! But I like to stick to a couple of the original beef ones added to my famous chillies, one of which is due to be created tonight Laugh. Mmmm yum!

I have to admit to eating out twice this week with old flying friends – first with a group of "fast-jet jocks", one of whom has been a friend since we went to the RAF College together in the mid 60s, and the others all "truckers " from my C130 days. Lots of laughs, many, many exaggerated tales (which get taller each time we tell them!), and an hour or two of reliving one's "tear-arse" younger days! Of course we wouldn't DREAM of doing some of those things THESE days……..WOULD we?? Wink

Well, Nige,

I live on my own, and although I love to cook for myself, there are two pubs where I can get a carvery, only three miles away from my kitchen. Wink

They each charge only £3.50, in the week, and on Sundays, its £6.50 in the one in Lee on Solent, and £4.50 in the Bridgemary one.

They are open all day, so when I get back from a ride, I usually top up with petrol, and then top myself up. Laugh

I paid £4,200 OTR. for my 400, in September. List price was £4,800. My local dealers didn't get close. I paid an extra £50, for them to deliver it, by van, from Swindon. It would have cost me that, to get there by public transport, to collect it, anyway. Carrying all my gear. Surprised

The 650 was then £7,100 OTR. list price. So it's really shot up in price now. The Yen's too strong. Yamaha's are worse.

Seems I was lucky with my 400's rear tyre, Peter. The fitter was able to loosen off a couple of bolts, and swing the exhaust clear of the rear wheel, to get it off.  For £62 all in.

Talk about " Burger-Miser " Wink

PS.

Er….thought you might like to know, I used up the last of my 1993/4 OXO's today. I need to get another box. Do they still sell them.??

Alan, you certainly do like your carvery lunches don't you! How many do you manage to squeeze in during an average week? Lol!

As for paying £7,860 for a new AN650Exec, well I wouldn't! I know prices have gone up since the new year with VAT being restored to 17.5% and Suzuki's own increases but I would never pay full price for any vehicle from a dealer whether it is a car or bike. You can always do a deal like I did. The list price for mine in December was £7,270 + on the road costs. I haggled and paid £6,800 including OTR costs after finding a similar deal on the internet. That's a saving of about £550.

I'm glad my local dealer went for it because I didn't really want to travel all the way to Watford to collect it.

Ah well, the service is done and wasn't TOO horrible! £190 including labour plus VAT – and when the work costs just short of £40 per hour it doesn't take long to run up that kind of bill! At least it's better than the £62 ph or more plus VAT that my car dealer charges!

Additionally my rear tyre needs replacement fairly soon so I'll get that done before the WB Ride – the quote is just short of £140 if it takes a full hour – apparently the procedure on the 650 is a real pain with the one-piece exhaust having to be removed among other bits! It CAN go quickly (fingers crossed!) or it can be the devil to undo!Yell

Thanks for the directions to the Google translator, Peter. I'll have a look at it, later. Although, I can't even remember ever going on Google's "home page" as I usually get Google through Firefox.

I suppose  "Idle Winter Gossip" is now coming to an end. It didn't do too bad, having a 6 page run.

Perhaps a new thread is needed, now. Like, "My Ride, Today". ???

Well, my ride today, was 110 miles long.

Along the top of Ports Down, up the A3, and turned off to Whitehill. Where I sat on a new, gleaming grey Burgman 650 Exe…..I like……But it's £7,860.Surprised

Back on the A3. Saw how the Devil's Punch Bowl's tunnel is progressing. Then Grayshott, and then narrow country lanes to Elstead. On to Farnham, and went into the Castle. A31, and dropped down to Selborne. A32 for home.  Temp. was between 8* & 10* C.

Stopped for a carvery, to finish off.  A good day's ride-out. Laugh

I've now clocked up over 3,000 miles, since 1st. September, 09.

Alan, the Google translator is accessible via your Google home page and clicking on the "more" at the right hand end of the list of services offered "Web Images Videos Maps News…." etc. When you get there it is simply a matter of filling in your word or phrase, adjusting the language boxes to achieve the translation you want and "Voila" …ooh sorry…"There you are!"

As for idle winter gossip I can report that at last I have dragged the scoot from the garage and ridden a 50 mile round trip today in beautiful winter sunshine with an air temp of around 3* or 4*C. Tomorrow is the pre-ride-out servicing in preparation for the megaride to Swindon and Wootton Bassett. The mileage is now just short of 10000 and while a service is not really due until 12000 I am giving myself reassurance as the previous service was a good while back under the previous ownership. I shall get both new plugs (8000 miles normally) and a new air filter (due at 12000), plus oil change and brake fluid change. Should be all set then for the ride AND the summer too! Laugh

Yes, you rotters. You lost ME, ages ago. Yell

But I'm very interested, in the lingo/s. I can pick up some of the words OK, occasionally. Wink

I've often thought I should try to learn French, because I think it sounds brill, when spoken fluently. I've got books, and tapes, but never seem to get the time, to take it up. Surprised

My sons always ribbed me, when I played an Edith Piaf album.Laugh

My problem is, I've got TOO many interests. Its a good job I don't work, any more.Smile

I've never heard of that Google translator, Peter. Could you give me directions, on how to get on it, please.?

I went for a 30 odd mile ride, today. Got caught in the rain. But I'd stashed my Belstaff rain over-suit under the seat, and whipped it on quickly. But my plimsolls got wet through. Surprised  But " Bon Voyage ",  all the same.Laugh

I didn't see the rugby, which was just as well, as I got the after-match talk, on the laptop.Yell  The Italians have got their act together, now. Pity we haven't.

Glad you got that "comp" article, ok. I knew it was there, somewhere, because I found it, before, but then forgot about it, again.

Nothing new there, then. Smile

Surprised Oooh you FIBBER!!! No, I always check with Mr Google, ever since my copilot transmitted to Athens Air Traffic Control "Athenai Control, calamari!" when he actually meant "Kalimera!". The controller briefly fell silent before the airwaves erupted with laughter! Yell

sacre bleu!

When you said "education and humour" I take it you were referring to England's education about how not to play rugby and the humour was more like the joke that was England's game plan?

Il rugby inglese del gioco più cattivo delle ragazze!

Let's see you translate that one Henry. Laugh
