Ted Perlinger sent in the following photo to share with you. I had to chuckle when I saw it since apparently Ted and I share the same mechanical sense. Actually I adopted the same mounting setup since I love things that are both simple and work well. I’ve never lost my mobile phone or GPS using this technique.

Ted Said:

“I am a great believer in the powers of Velcro and use it for many purposes. After studying various options to use my Garmin E-Map, I resorted back to the trusted Velcro solution.

The location on the handle bar cover is obvious and can be seen on the photo. The back of the GPS unit is covered completely with Velcro-Strips, except to leave space to be able to remove the connector, when battery replacement is needed. I simply drilled a 6.0mm hole through the gap of the closed compartment door and voila, instant mount. And to maintain the necessary cable loop for unrestricted handle bar movement? You guessed it – more Velcro!

Neither pothole covered Mexican roads nor any other condition has ever caused the GPS to even move over 4000 miles of travel. All function buttons can be easily accessed and operated with gloves. If you feel safer removing it for your overnight stay in some questionable areas, that’s easily done and then locked away in the glove compartment. I never have, because I cover up the entire scooter and so at least it is out of sight. So far it stayed with the Burgman.”

“While traveling, I decided to give my Burgman a good and thorough cleaning. Here is a suggestion: Drive into the car wash; put the scoot on its center stand. Start the engine, engage your cruise control and accelerate enough to make the rear wheel turn maybe a 100 rpm or so. Then give it a good dousing with the pressure hose, without aiming at the center of the wheel. That could be bad for the bearing seals. I sprayed only as high as the tunnel front to rear and after drying off the Burgman, used the moist towel to wipe the rest. Fast, easy and with rewarding results.”

Burgman 400 Loveland Pass

“I had planned a trip from Ensenada to Georgetown, CO and until the last two days before departure, I was tossed between taking my Honda PC 800 (as I had before) or my Burgman 400. As I told myself in the end, taking the bike would be easy and I just HAD to try the scooter one time and see how it would fare.

Left on August 31st and got as far as Barstow, CA on Interstate 15. Next day, early in the morning I got up and cruised through Las Vegas and decided on the spur to make a slight detour on Highway 93 to Ash Springs and from there on 319 and 35 to Cedar City, UT. With over 420 miles on that day, it was the farthest I went in one day.

Then (a very cold 35 degree) crossing the mountains over Hwy 14 and 143 (quite scenic) to Hwy 89 N to Heber City, Utah. From there on Hwy 40 to Kremling, CO and on my last day through Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road and Peak to Peak Highway to Georgetown.

By then 1,600 miles had passed very pleasantly and my extra clothing and gloves came very handy indeed at times, when temperatures dropped suddenly into the freezing range.

After 10 days staying there and making some interesting day trips over several mountain passes, I started my trip back, because the higher elevations of Colorado had already received snow and that was a good hint to leave.

Came back through Durango, the Four-Corners Area, Flagstaff, Prescott and Palm Desert, where I spent my last night. Back into higher elevations to escape the heat, I rode to Tecate over Hwy 74 and 79, crossed Interstate 8 and back into Mexico again. A very beautiful day trip and totally away from traffic. By the time I got here, I had covered more than 3,500 miles – and all highly enjoyable. In Colorado alone, I had crossed at least six mountain Passes from between 11,000 to over 12,000 ft altitude and could still pass if needed in the uphill sections. Going up on Monarch Pass, a Honda 1100 pulled ahead after some time and on top the rider talked to me about my scooter and how big the engine was. He said that he had to shift into a lower gear to be able to finally pass me. He was surprised, to say the least.

Summary:

You do not need 1,500 cc and 130 ho travel with comfortably – less than a third of each will suffice and I am tempted to make the Burgman-400 MY mode of two-wheel travel, as long as I go by myself.

While riding on regular highways, the scoot was competent and the available power more than adequate to keep up with the Jones’s or leave them behind.

I did not want to cruise extended time with more than 6000 rpm, which translates to real (GPS) 62-65 mph. On regular highways, that puts you right in the middle and where the speed limit is. However, on the Interstate the big rigs WILL pass you constantly and the wake they cause results in being rattled a bit. Nothing to worry, but still not pleasant. So, I will stay away from the Interstate as much as I can.

The “poor man’s” cruise control worked wonderfully and even allowed me to take a one-handed photo or two on the Freeway while moving. With both hands briefly off, the scooter never wobbled – so I must have packed and tied my stuff correctly.

With two bag-liners from my Honda under the seat and a waterproof duffle back on the rear seat, plus the Moto-Fizz bag on the rear rack, I had more than adequate luggage with me and in excess than what I actually ended up using.

While there were times where I would have mentally traded for a 650, I came to appreciate the lighter weight and maneuverability of my smaller unit. Easier parking, getting off and on again make up for the missing power.

I should write Suzuki what a fine touring machine they have created. In those 3,500 miles, I never encountered another Burgman-400 on a similar mission. Possibly, the owners are not confident enough what it is capable of. Maybe this will help to convince them… “

“Hey the burgman brothers take on a MDA ride with close to 2000 Harley’s out of Sauk City,WI. We rode about 1 hour out and 1 hour back this was a no stop ride, it was organized very well they had intersection blockers and all we did was go! The great thing is that no one belittled our Burgman’s as we kept up with the pack very well.

The picture shows us in the misdst of the crowd. We are planing a fall ride to Door county to see the color change, they say it’s awesome. This could be addicting and is a freedom of expression that is burned into your memory for ever. So all who can, should get out and make some memories that will live forever in your heart and bring you closer together with friends and family.

Carl sent in the following photo to share with you. Here is what he had to say about it.

“In this photo three brothers are rejoined together in a joint venture in which brought them together after a time of seperation from each other . We went from the central part of Wisconsin up to the Mac a Nac Island ,MI just touring the area and then proceeded over to Superior and down towards La crosse,WI. This trip was their Wild Hogg adventure and a bonding experience.(” The Lord said it is not good for man to be alone so he created brothers to ride with and cruse this land and feel free as the wind!)”

It is so nice to see riders from other parts of the world participating with videos and pictures here at BurgmanRiders.com. What really got my attention is Pitor’s comment with his photo, “The way to ride fast away from reality!” So nice to see the Burgman brings the same reality to all of us no matter which side of the ocean you may be on.

If you have a Burgman photo and story to share, you can contribute it here.
