So Sebastian wrote in and asked the following question:

Dear Burg Man,

I was wondering if you could advise me.

If I were to import a Burgman 400 2008 from the USA into Israel where would you recommend that I purchase it from in the US?

Do you know of anyone who caters in exporting bikes there?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Sebastian

Sebastian, I’d certainly be able to assist you if I could in your quest for your Burgman but I’m sure there are others here who may have already had a similar experience. Let’s hope they comment on this article.

I have looked into importing vehicles into the U.S. and sending vehicles to the U.S. from abroad and I learned one valuable thing. It seems that very few, if any, countries have a problem with you sending a scooter, motorcycle or vehicle out of the country but the issue seems to be if the vehicle will meet the import requirements of the country it is going in to.

I would suggest that you first check with the department of transportation or motor vehicle agency to make sure that the year and model Burgman is eligible for import without any modifications. If it is, then making transportation arrangements is a fairly straightforward process.

Maybe one of our readers that lives near a major seaport would also be available to make sure the transaction goes through at a port local dealership and shipping arrangements are made for you.

  1. Sebastian, I would recomend that you forget that idea and buy your bike when you get over here. Not only will you have to pay the tax that you didn’t pay by not buying the bike here, yoou will also have to pay for the shipping. If you buy it here you will be sure that you have all of the correct papers and certificates for the bike and that it conforms to all of the Israeli laws.
If you are a new citizen, you will have the right to buy a motor vehicle at a reduced price which in reality is a reduction in tax.
I was looking at a 650 exec. the other day and I believe I was told a 400 was 41,000 shekeles. You have to check the rate of exchange to see what that is but right now it is about $12,000. That price includes all of the taxes. You would get atleast a 50-75% reduction in the tax bring the price down to close to the American price. You would also be getting to know a dealer who would do the service. A lot of places don’t want to work on things that weren’t bought there expecially if there were warranty issues you would be covered. We might have different issues here than in the States.
    That is my opinion.

P.S. If you ask me specific questions, I might be able to find them out for you.

  2. Sebatian,

Allan has some very good points and that might be the better way to go.

  3. The other point to note is that the US model differs from the Israel model and some parts may be more difficult to find.

Vehicle approval standards are different and the US model may not be approved for use in Israel. The costs of testing and paperwork to prove it meets local standards may not be cheap.

    Buy a local one.
