Burgman DIY – Installing an LED Turn Signal Indicator
Mike Huffman sent in the following article and pictures to share with everyone. Thanks Mike.
I read about a turn signal buzzer and agreed that it was a necessity for me because I habitually forget to cancel the signal. I realize this is dangerous because it leaves others not knowing your real intentions. But I have a slight hearing problem. I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to hear the buzzer, as others also indicated. I decided on an alternative to the turn signal buzzer, an LED indicator.

LED Blinkers Installed
I went to Pep Boys and picked up an LED turn signal indicator arrow, distributed by K-Source, Inc. This is one of their Fit Systems components, part number S880. Pep Boys sells it for less than $10 for the pair. K-Source can be contacted at www.ksource.org or by phone at 310-608-2538.

As I said this is an LED turn signal arrow, similar to the ones you see integrated into high end SUV mirrors. It is shaped like an arrow, about 2” high with the connection coming out at the point of the arrow. This allows the indicator to be positioned at the edge of the mirror so the wire can wrap around behind the mirror, and cannot be seen once the install is finished. The indicator comes with sticky back adhesive and is easily applied simply by removing the protective cover, positioning the indicator and pressing it in place. It only draws 0.05 Amps when on, so there is almost no drain on the battery.
Start by removing the front turn signal. This is accomplished by using a small blade screwdriver to remove the screw cap on the bottom of the mirror/light housing. Simply insert the blade and apply a small pressure and the cap will pop out.
Then with a Phillips screw driver, remove the screw. A small collar will come out with the screw.
Insert the screw driver up into the hole where the screw was removed and apply a slight pressure on the turn signal lamp. The lamp will push out of the opening. The lamp is held in place by the screw on one end and a slight protrusion on the other side which fits into an opening. It is attached by two wires connected to a plug. To separate the plug, you must lift up slightly on the connector tab while pulling apart.
The Green wire is 12 volts and the black wire is ground. Skin about ¼” of the insulation from both wires. A soldering iron can be used for this or, carefully use an exacto knife. Either disconnect the battery, or take care to not allow the two wires to touch.
Route the wires from the indicator behind the mirror and into the opening behind the mirror. Remove the adhesive backing from the indicator and position it where the point is aligned with the edge of the mirror and press in place. Pull the excess wire into the cavity of the turn signal lamp.
Wrap the wires from the LED indicator around the exposed wires. The Red wire from the indicator attaches to the Green wire and the White wire from the indicator attaches to the Black wire. Be careful not to let the 12V and Ground wires touch.
Before going any further, press the connector back together, turn on the ignition and the signal. Both the signal lamp and the indicator should work together. If both work, apply a drop of solder to the connection and/or wrap the connection securely with electrical tape.
Carefully insert the lamp back into the cavity with the connector and excess wiring behind it; there is plenty of room.
Insert the screw and tighten securely. Insert the screw cap by aligning the tab with the slot.
Do the other side in the same manner.
This is an extremely simple procedure recommended for everyone. It takes less than an hour. It adds an element of class and distinction to your scooter. It will make your ride more enjoyable and much safer.

I have installed some on my scoot. I agree. There pretty bright and, like you, they do add some safety features with that. Good job!
Daves last blog post..The ALF cam prodject.
Good on you! I also will install a set when I can find a Pep Boys. Might have to go online, but it sure looks good.
thanks
Hi All! I like those LED’s!! Like you I forget sometimes to turn off my directionals. Extremely dangerous!! Those are for the 600 model mirrors. I have a 400 – 06. Does anybody know how to install buzzers to the directionals?? The wiring is actually what i’m trying to find. I took off the tupperware under the windshield and that did nothing. Do I really need to take apart the piece under that one which looks like a pain in the ass, putting it mildlyor are the wires accessable from anywhere else?? Thanks Tom
Tom Bob,
People have installed turn signal buzzers two ways that I know of. I’m not sure if the install is different for a 400 vs a 650 (which I have). I’d do a search on the Burgmanusa forum in Colchicine’s compendium of information on “how to” to a wide variety of mods and fixes.
One method people have used is to individually wire a Radio Shack piezo buzzer into each side mirror casing. Some simply stick the buzzer wire into the connector for the turn signal in the casing, others solder it. The other method (which I used) only requires one buzzer. On a 650 you open the fuse box door which is located on the left side of the larger glove box door. Inside is the turn signal relay with it’s brown and blue wire. The idea is to bridge these two wires with the two wires from the buzzer. This worked very well for me and others.

Thanks for us know that these are available. I too, sometimes forget to turn off the signals. Don’t know if it’s the same at all Pep Boys, but the one here doesn’t have them with the other LED items. Theyare located in the mirror section. After spending quite some time looking, I finally broke down and asked. It’s amazing how helpful that can be
I can tell that this is not the first time you mention the topic. Why have you chosen it again?

This is one awesome toy, nice post.
good Idea I didn’t use the arrows , but I had some single 12v LEDs laying around so I put one in each side, really easy to do. thanks for the info
Does anyone know where I can buy the flexible strip diode set you can install on the mirrors? I have read somewhere how to install them on the Burgman , but no info of where to buy them . Help much appreciated. Email me ….lobal@shaw.ca . I am sure not to be the only one looking for them.
I am new to the Burgman family. Bought a new 2009-400 on August 4 and have to date 643 KM on her. I found the windshield a bit too short and bolted a 5 inch high
strip of clear 3/16″ plastic , 14″ long. I am 5′ 11″ tall and now can look over the windshield without feeling any wind at all! I bend the plastic slightly to conform to the screen shape. I used 3 -1/8 stainless steel bolts , spaced 2″ apart measured from the outer edges of each side. I rounded all corners. This is a cheap but efficient way to improve the enjoyment of your Burgman.

hello from pennsylvania, i have a 2003 650, i put led strips on my mirrors, from OZNIUM.COM (cs@oznium.com $12.00 include postage , get the strip,s with 6 lites orange, matches the turn signal . very easy install, there a little cap to pop off under each turn signal, phillips head screw under there, pop the light out and ever thing is right there to tap into, lite have sticky stuff and they stay put very easy job, dean
I have a pair of your arrow signals hooked up to the Hardbags on my 08 Sportster and there Great! I like the way they Look on my Bike.
Hey. I got a 502 gateway error earlier today when I tried to access this page. Anyone else had the problem?
